History of the IPI (1960-1969)
The 60s marked IPIs growing participation in Asia with the start of the IPI Asia program aimed at advising editorial staff and helping them to examine problems of the press.
IPI also spread its wings over the African continent, starting the IPI Africa program aimed at training African journalists.
By 1965, IPI’s expansion as a world organization was confirmed with operations in 32 countries.
IPI continued its expansion process by passing a resolution to admit radio and television journalists as members in 1965, signalling IPIs ongoing adaptation to the changing times.
In 1968, IPI supported the courage displayed by journalists in Czechoslovakia in the face of brutal attempts by occupying forces to silence the media.
IPI held its General Assembly (GA) in Nairobi, Kenya in 1968, marking its first ever in Africa.
The GAs of this decade were held in Tokyo (1960), Tel Aviv (1961), Paris (1962), Stockholm (1963), Istanbul (1964), London (1965), New Delhi (1966), Geneva (1967), Nairobi (1968), and Ottawa (1969).
