IPI, the global network of editors, media executives and leading journalists, is dedicated to the furtherance and safeguarding
of press freedom, the promotion of the free flow of news and information, and the improvement of the practices of journalism

IPI World Press Freedom Heroes

In May 2000, IPI named 50 World Press Freedom Heroes from around the globe to commemorate the 50th anniversary of its founding. The 50 Heroes were chosen from a long list of journalists who made a significant contribution to the defence and/or promotion of press freedom in their country, especially if this involved acts of bravery or resistance under harsh conditions. On 7 December 2006, on the occasion of the two-month commemoration of her murder, IPI honoured Russian investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya by posthumously naming her its 51st World Press Freedom Hero.
